Several small businesses and startups have approached me and wondered where they can start when determining their overall marketing strategy.

"Which social media platform is best?"

"How much should I spend on Facebook Ads?"

The list goes on.

All the questions almost always lead me to give to the same answer: start over.

I derived this quote from Philip Kotler (whom many, including myself, believe to be the father of marketing): “Marketing is meeting the needs of your audience profitably.”

This means that every startup must:

  1. Identify & learn about their target market or the audience*

  2. Identify & learn about the audience's needs/problems*

  3. Create value by meeting/solving said needs/problems*

*All while doing so in a profitable manner.

Once you determine that plan, can you only move forward and establish the details within your social media marketing strategy. If you know your audience, you can determine exactly which social media platform works best.

Who is your audience?

What are their needs?

What value do you bring to meet their needs?
